Rico Yan 's uncle, broadcaster Angelo Castro Jr dies, also on Holy Week

Angelo Castro Jr, a veteran broadcast journalist and creator of ABS-CBN's TV Patrol, has died today, April 5, 2012.

Angelo Castro Jr.Today happens to be Maundy Thursday, and 10 years ago, Castro's nephew actor Rico Yan (Real Name: Ricardo Carlos Castro Yan) also died on Holy Week, March 29, 2002 (Good Friday).

ABS-CBN News has just reported that Angelo Castro, or Sir Angelo as what ABS-CBN people used to call him, died of lung cancer today at the St Luke's Medical Center in QC.

He was 67.

According to an ANC (ABS-CBN News Channel) report, Castro's remains will be cremated also today and the wake will be held at their residence tomorrow until Tuesday or Wednesday.

Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda has immediately issued a statement on the death of Angelo Castro Jr, posted via www.gov.ph:

"We mourn the passing of Angelo Castro Jr. For many years he was a calm and reassuring presence in the late evening news. His passing marks the closing of an era of gentlemanly broadcasting, where erudition and dignity were the hallmarks of news and current affairs."


An actor-turned-broadcaster, Angelo Castro Jr is the father of former actor Diego Castro, who also starred with Rico Yan in the hit ABS-CBN weekly program 'Gimik'.

Castro is best known to the viewers as the news anchor of "The World Tonight" on ABS-CBN.

10 years ago, on Good Friday, the very popular Rico Yan died at age 27.

Rico was believed to have died of cardiac arrest caused by acute hemorrhagic pancreatitis. © www.mykiru.ph
