Gilas Pilipinas have qualified for 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain! Congrats Gilas Pilipinas! Spell W-O-W!!!

Philippines' Smart Gilas Pilipinas made one historic win Saturday night when they defeated Korea, 86-79, to earn a slot in the FIBA Asia 2013 Championship finals and compete versus Iran.

It's the first time for the Philippines to enter the finals of FIBA Asia Championship ever since the Gilas Pilipinas team was formed. But so long ago, the Philippine national basketball team already made it there 7 times and even won the championship 5 times (1960, 1963, 1967, 1973, 1985). The 1985 win was also the last time Philippines played in FIBA Asia finals.

As for Iran, it will only be their 3rd time. And in their previous 2 appearances in the finals (2007, 2009), they emerged as Champions. It's going to be a tough challenge for Gilas Pilipinas to prevent Iran from getting its 3rd win out of 3 championship games. In FIBA Asia 2013 standings, Iran is also undefeated, winning 7 out of 7.

Meanwhile, Korea will battle for 3rd place against Chinese Taipei happening at 5PM today, August 11, as per schedule. The FIBA Asia Cup 2013 championship game, Philippines vs Iran, is at 7:30PM.

Chinese Taipei vs Korea for Bronze (3rd Place), 5PM, at MOA Arena

Philippines vs Iran for Gold (1st Place), 7:30PM, at MOA Arena

Happening before that are the 7th Place Game (Japan vs Kazakhstan) at 1230PM, then the Battle for 5th (Qatar vs China) at 2:45PM.

2014 FIBA WORLD CUP
With their entry into the FIBA Asia 2013 Championship Finals, Iran and Philippines have now qualified for the 2014 FIBA World Cup, to be held in Spain August 'til September next year. The 3rd qualifier from Asia will either be Korea or Chinese Taipei, whoever wins in their Battle for 3rd game. (I'm hoping it's Korea.)

It marks Iran's 2nd time to reach FIBA Basketball World Cup. The last time was in 2010 and they finished in 19th Place.

For Gilas Pilipinas, it's the first time ever. But the Philippines had been there 4 times already and their highest finish was 3rd in 1954. Wow. That defines HISTORICAL PAST.

Congratulations Gilas Pilipinas and good luck!
