Janine Tugonon finished 1st Runner Up in the Miss Universe 2012, but many believe she should have won over Miss USA Olivia Culpo as Miss Universe 2012 winner.

Miss Universe Philippines, Janine Tugonon, is declared first runner-up as, Miss USA, Olivia Culpo, is named the winner of the 2012 Miss Universe Competition. She will be crowned with the Diamond Nexus Labs crown at the close of the LIVE NBC Telecast of the 2012 Miss Universe Competition at PH Live in Las Vegas, Nevada on December 19, 2012.

Maybe because of Janine Tugonon's impressive answer at the Miss Universe 2012 Final Q and A (interview portion) where she was asked: "As an international ambassador, do you believe that speaking English should be a pre-requisite to being Miss Universe? Why or why not?"

The said question was asked by former America's Next Top Model host Nigel Barker, a question which was picked from a Twitter user who participated in the pageant's "#askmissuniverse" campaign. (Read: Miss Universe 2012 Twitter Questions for the Final Question and Answer portion)

And Miss Philippines Janine Tugonon answered it with this:

"For me, being Miss Universe is not just about knowing how to speak a specific language. It's being able to influence and inspire other people. (applause) So whatever language you have, as long as your heart is to serve and you have a strong mind to show to people, then you can be Miss Universe. Thank you. (applause)."

It's now the Philippines' highest placement in Miss Universe since 1999 when Miriam Quiambao also finished as 1st Runner Up.

During the 2010 and 2011 pageants, our country's bets Venus Raj and Shamcey Supsup were also in the Top 5 and placed 4th Runner Up and 3rd Runner Up respectively.

It's actually only the 2nd time that the Philippines placed as 1st Runner Up.

In Miss Universe history, the Philippines had 2 titleholders (1969, 1973), 2 1st Runners-Up (1999, 2012), 3 3rd Runners Up, 2 4th Runners Up and 8 semi-finalists. - Mykiru.ph
