MMFF 2014 Box Office Gross Results for the 1st Day are out: Which of the 8 official entries was the top grosser on opening day? Read 'til the very end of this post. (View: MMFF 2014 box-office results as of 4th Day)

The 40th Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) had a very successful opening today, December 25, 2014. It's Christmas Day, and apparently, it has become a tradition already for most Filipinos to go out and flock theaters for the first day of this annual filmfest.

There are 8 official entries this 2014, 8 choices for the moviegoers.

Based on what I had observed at the mall cinemas, I think 'The Amazing Praybeyt Benjamin' starring Vice Ganda, Richard Yap, Tom Rodriguez, Alex Gonzaga and Bimby Aquino Yap was the top choice and will easily take the #1 spot in the MMFF 2014 box office ranking, as proved by the very long queue, many sold-out screenings and allottment of larger cinemas. Huge number of people lining up at SM cinema entrance for 'Praybeyt Benjamin 2'

Long lines and sold-out screenings as well for Kris Aquino-Coco Martin horror movie 'Feng Shui 2' and even the Vic Sotto-Ryzza Mae Dizon-Marian Rivera film 'My Big Bossing'. These 2 could battle for 2nd and 3rd.

With lesser screenings and shorter lines at the cinema entrance than the above-mentioned films, any of 'Kubot: The Aswang Chronicles 2', 'Shake, Rattle & Roll XV' and 'Bonifacio: Ang Unang Pangulo' will possibly take 4th, 5th and 6th slots.

The Bottom 2 perhaps, based on expectations even before the festival started, are 'English Only, Please' and 'Magnum Muslim .357'.

At 10 this evening, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) revealed that on 1st day, MMFF 2014 movies collectively grossed P147.2-million, a new record beating last year's P128M. In the Top 4, as also reported by the Philippine Star, were 'Praybeyt Benjamin 2' (P53.3M), 'Feng Shui 2' (P31M), 'My Big Bossing' (P28M) and 'Kubot: The Aswang Chronicles 2' (P12M).

It is always expected in every year of the festival that the year-to-year grosses will make a new record because they also increase every year the movie ticket prices. Hope there's a way to determine the actual number of tickets sold and not the total collections so that we would know if a movie is indeed performing better than the entries in the past year. -Mykiru.ph
