Evan Almighty, not so mighty in the box-office

Evan Almighty debuted at #1 last weekend, raked in an impressive $32.1M opening sales, but still not mighty as compared to Jim Carrey's Bruce Almighty, which had a very high $68 million opening weekend.

Other new releases include 1408 at #2 and Angelina Jolies' A Mighty Heart, at #10.

1408's sales is impressive, overtaking previous week's champ Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, which slipped to #3.

Spider-Man dropped to #12, after staying in the Top 10 for 9 weeks.

Here's the US Weekend Box-Office (June 22-24, 2007):
1. "Evan Almighty," $32.1 million.
2. "1408," $20.175 million.
3. "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer," $20.15 million.

  1. That can be expected, I suppose. Neither of the big two stars of "Bruce Almighty" returned. Instead, we get Steve Carrel, whom I love but isn't box-office dynamite.

Second, I think the premise of this one seems far more offensive than the first (I haven't seen either, BTW). The first movie had a man given godly powers. The second, a man is asked to build an ark for a pending flood, despite the fact that God promised to never cause a worldwide flood again (after all, rainbows are reminders of God's promise, not the refraction of light through moist air).
