Ai-Ai, unhappy with Sarah's 'Box Office Queen' title?

Sarah Geronimo has just been named 2008 Box Office Queen by the SM Cinema and will receive the award on February 18th.

And with that, there's a strong possibility that she will also be named the Box Office Queen of RP Movies by the Guillermo Mendoza Memorial Scholarship Foundation sometime next month for their annual BoxOffice Entertainment Awards.

The news about Sarah's crowning as Box Office Queen makes Ai-Ai delas Alas maybe a little sad as she was very vocal before that she wanted that award to affirm her box-office status.

Her latest movie 'Ang Tanging Ina N'yong Lahat' shown from December 25, 2008 to January 21, 2009 had higher accumulated earnings than Sarah's A Very Special Love shown from July 30 to September 16, 2008. She was a Box Office Queen in 2003 for Tanging Ina.

As what I have said in an earlier post, Sarah and John Lloyd Cruz will possibly get the Box Office titles from the Guillermo Mendoza Scholarship Foundation if the group will only count Ang Tanging Ina N'yong Lahat's earnings from December 25-31, 2008.

In an article by Mario E. Bautista for People's Journal, Ai-Ai expressed her side about the 'box office queen' tag:

“Kasi raw, ang puwede lang i-credit, 'yung earnings ng movie ko from December 25 to 31. 'Yung for January, hindi na puwede. May cut off date daw. E, bakit kaya sa kaso ni Bossing Vic Sotto, they credited noon ang earnings ng filmfest entries niya during and after the filmfest? Win pa rin siya. Di maliwanag na they just change their rules according sa kung sino ang gusto nilang bigyan ng award. Pinapalitan nila ang criteria nila kung kailan nila gusto. But I don’t want to sound bitter na para bang atat na atat ako diyan sa award. Bahala na lang sila. But I’m sure, the people know kung alin talagang pelikula ang mas kumita." she said.

I think Ai-Ai did not understand the rulings before when Vic Sotto was named Box Office King.

The reason why Vic was named Box Office King (four times) is because there was no other actor worthy of the title. His movies were not the topgrossing films of the year (except in 2005) but he was given the title simply because the Box Office Queen for that particular year had no male counterpart in the movie.

In 2003, Box Office Queen Ai-Ai had no leading man in 'Tanging Ina' thus the Box Office King title went to Vic Sotto for 'Lastikman'. The same thing happened in 2004, where Kris Aquino got the title for 'Feng Shui' and Vic for 'Enteng Kabisote 1'.

The year 2005 though was really meant for Vic as he was the Box Office King while Kristine Hermosa, his leading lady in 'Enteng Kabisote 2', was the Box Office Queen.

And finally in 2006, Kris and Claudine Barretto were both given the Box Office Queen title for 'Sukob' while Vic was Box Office King for 'Enteng Kabisote 3'.

And SPEAKING of Box Office:

'When I Met U' starring Richard Gutierrez and KC Concepcion reportedly had 10 million pesos during its opening day last Wednesday.
