Maria Lourdes Sereno, 52, has been appointed as the new Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines.

President Noynoy Aquino revealed his decision just this afternoon, August 24, picking Maria Lourdes Sereno as the new Chief Justice over 7 other shortlisted candidates.

Maria Lourdes Sereno, who has been serving already as Supreme Court Associate Justice, was favored by PNoy over fellow Associate Justice and also strong contender Antonio Carpio.

Carpio, who has been an SC Associate Justice for almost 11 years already, was the top choice of the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC), who submitted the shortlist to the President last week. Carpio had 7 votes from JBC members while Sereno had 6.

In a poll conducted on this blog asking the voters who PNoy should appoint as the next Chief Justice, Carpio was also the leading choice with 50.82% of the votes. Sereno, meanwhile, came in 2nd, but with only 13.11%.

Aside from Maria Lourdes Sereno and Antonio Carpio, the other shortlisted candidates for the Chief Justice position were Associate Justices Roberto Abad, Arturo Brion and Teresita Leonardo-De Castro, former Ateneo Law Dean Cesar Villanuev, Solicitor General Francis Jardeleza and former Executive Secretary Ronaldo Zamora.
