SM Megamall shootout, robbery incident - - HORRIBLE!!!

SM Megamall robbery-related shootout incident (involving Martilyo Gang) has just happened past 7 tonight, January 26, 2013, causing mall-goers and shoppers to panic.

According to a tweet by @smsupermalls, the robbery shooting incident happened at a jewelry counter at SM MegaMall Deparment Store.

Thanks God that there were no casualties. But I'm worried that there were badly hurt because the shooting caused stampede among shoppers who were rushing to get out of the mall.

Some other customers had to be locked inside stalls, stores and supermarket of SM Megamall for their security.

There was an ongoing cosplay event, the 2-day Otaku Expo 2013, at the Megatrade Hall 1 of SM Megamall Building B when the shooting / robbery incident happened and reportedly, the robbers were also in costumes.

Now I get it. The robbers took advantage of the cosplay event and the guards probably thought they were just holding fake guns and harmless props.

We'll see if the robbers were indeed in costumes after the CCTV video of the incident is shown to the public.

Talking to ANC, the Eastern Police District Director C/Supt. Miguel Laurel has said that there were 4 to 5 suspects and they weren't wearing masks nor costumes, but just ordinary clothes.

And contrary to reports that hammers were used in the robbery, Laurel said that the suspects used a pipe wrench, even if the robbers are suspected to be members of "Martilyo Gang".

The mall's operation went back to normal after almost an hour, until it closed at 10PM.

I find this incident really horribe because SM Megamall is one of the largest malls in the country and a very crowded one. It's also a Saturday and there were really lots of shoppers in a busy hour, but still, the robbery holdup happened.

SM Megamall is one of 43 SM Supermalls owned by Henry Sy Sr., the richest man in the Philippines, and yet, there's a big question on how secured it is after the robbery.

Remember, this isn't the first time that it happened at an SM mall. In 2011, there were 2 cases of shooting incident inside the mall: one at SM North EDSA when a woman shot and killed her husband (who was an SM employee), and another one at SM Pampanga involving 2 teenager boys. - Mykiru.ph
