Aceh, Sumatra in Indonesia was struck by two (2) strong earthquakes today, April 11, 2012. (OMG! It's #11 again!)

A massive earthquake has hit Indonesia's Aceh Province in Sumatra (Sumatera) Island at 2:38 this afternoon (Indonesia time).

The US Geological Survey (USGS) has reported the said Indonesia earthquake as having 8.6-magnitude, with epicenter off the west coast of Northern
Sumatra, 270 miles southwest of Banda, Aceh in Indonesia.

And since earthquakes of such magnitude have the potential to generate a widespread destructive tsunami, the Pacific Tsunami Watch Warning
Center has immediately issued an Indian Ocean-wide tsunami warning following the quake.

According to its bulletin, the tsunami warning was in effect for all areas of the Indian Ocean which include the
following countries and territories:

Indonesia
Singapore
India
Sri Lanka
Australia
Myanmar
Thailand
Malaysia
Pakistan
Somalia
Bangladesh
Oman
Iran
Yemen
United Arab Emirates
Maldives
United Kingdom
Tanzania
Mozambique
Kenya
South Africa
Reunion
Seychelles
Madagascar
Comores
Crozet Islands
Kerguelen Islands

Two hours after the 8.6-magnitude earthquake, an aftershock earthquake of 8.2-magnitude has hit Aceh, Indonesia at 4:43PM. A tsunami alert was also issued for the new quake.

Tsunami warnings for both quakes were later lifted, more than an hour after the aftershock earthquake.

In December 2004, Sumatra, Indonesia was already hit by a deadly 9.1-magnitude earthquake which triggered a tsunami across Indian Ocean areas and killed over 230,000 people.
